Veryan
Post was the very first Cornish
aircraft reporting post to be
opened
in January 1940. The post was set on
top of Carne Beacon one mile inland and
was designated T2 Post, part of No 20 Group Truro.
.
The
post was equipped with high frequency radio for communication with
aircraft lost or in distress. In 1942 a satellite post was
set up at Perbargus Point. In 1953 the Post was re-designated F1
as part of No 11 Group Truro.

In July
1963 the post was re-sited to its present
position on Nare Head and the old post on Carne Beacon was
discontinued. Also in 1963 the underground
post was built, the aircraft role was discontinued, and the nuclear
role commenced. The post continued
in this role until general stand down in September 1991 when the
post closed. The site then reverted to the National Trust.
The post was leased from the Trust by the Truro Branch of
the ROCA in October
1995 and opened as a post museum in July 1996. To date over 1000
visitors have been to the post and all have been fascinated at this
insight into the Cold War era. The post has also been the subject of
visits by TV companies, national and local radio and the press.
